Upon opening the app with an iPhone, a message appears asking if you will allow your current location to be used. By choosing “allow”, the app will pull up the earthquake data pertinent to your current location. At any time you can change the location from within the app.
The opening screen within the app is of a map with color coded pins for all earthquakes either near you or your chosen location. From here you can navigate to the options described below.
Description of options:
Map Screen:
This is the landing screen when you first open Earthquake. The map will display a purple pin with your current or chosen location. It will also show all earthquakes within a set distance, magnitude, and timeframe (based on your chosen “Filter” options).
Earthquake pins: these are color coded representing time and the size of them are based on the magnitude of the earthquake. The color codes are as follows:
- Red: earthquake occurred in the last hour
- Green: earthquake occurred in the last day
- Yellow: earthquake occurred in the last week
- Purple: your current or selected location
Note: within any of the maps, you can move around by swiping your finger as you would any picture on the iPhone/iPod Touch. e.g. finger swipe left moves left, finger swipe right moves right, moving fingers from the center of the screen in an outward manner zooms in, and swiping fingers towards each other on the screen zooms in.
By clicking on any of the earthquake pins, a small popup box appears with basic information on the earthquake. If you press the arrow within this box, a new screen appears with all of the detail surrounding the earthquake plus additional actions you can take.
Detail screen:
This screen provides all the detail about any individual earthquake you select, a close up map, and options to go to the USGS website or email a screenshot. Note: on this screen, the earthquake detailed now shows as a red pin on the map. You can fully navigate within this map.
USGS: When you click on this box, you will be directed to the USGS website. From here you can navigate as you would any other web page. Navigation keys for “refresh”, “back”, and “forward” appear below the screen. At the top there is a “Done” button to return you back to the app at any time. There is a wealth of additional information that can be accessed via this official webpage such as more specialized maps (Seismic Hazard, Historical, etc.), scientific & technical information, and more earthquake details. Be sure to check out the various tab options.
Note: within the initial screen of the USGS website, there is a “Did you feel it?” link where you can report shaking and any damage that may have occurred in your location.
Email: From within the detail screen, if you click on the email icon at the bottom right of the screen a new 'compose' email will pop up. The subject line is prefilled out but you can edit it or add your own if you desire. A complete screenshot is already attached to the email so you just need to add an address in the “To” field and any comments you want to add to the body of the email. Note: the email is prefilled with a short message along with a link to the official USGS website but you can edit and/or add to it. When you're finished composing your email, click either “Send” or “Cancel”. Either choice will bring you back to the detail screen.
List Screen:
This is a list of all the earthquakes near you or your chosen location. This list can be sorted by Magnitude (“Mag”), S elected Location, or Date of occurance by tapping on the column heading. For instance, if you click on “Mag” at the top of the column, it will sort the earthquakes by magnitude first by largest to smallest and if you click “Mag” again, it will sort from smallest to largest. Each column heading works the same.
Filter: From here you can edit various filters used by the app. The options are:
- Distance from location - use the slider to select earthquakes from 0 km (0 mile) from your location to All (all earthquakes worldwide).
- Minimum earthquake magnitude - select from 1.0 to 8.0+
- Timeframe - Select past “Hour”, past “Day” or past “Week”
Refresh: The icon to the furthest left on the bottom of the screen is the refresh button. Anytime you push this, the app will be updated to the latest data available.
Location: When you click on this icon, a new screen will appear. From here you can click on “Current, Search, or Address Book”.
- Current: by using the built in GPS, the app will choose your current location
- Search: you can type in any address or location and the app will make this the base location
- Address Book: choose any contact in your address book and the app will switch locations to this new location
Click “Done” after making your selection and you will be returned to the last screen you were on previously.
